Onn Tablet Won’t Turn On? 8 Fixes for Every Walmart Model (2026 Guide)
Your Onn tablet was working fine, and now it’s a dark rectangle that refuses to respond. Maybe the screen is black and nothing happens when you press the power button. Maybe it shows a flashing battery icon but won’t boot. Maybe the Walmart or Onn logo appears and then disappears in a loop. Before you write it off and buy a new one, work through the eight fixes below — one of them will bring most Onn tablets back to life, whether you own a Surf Onn 7″, Onn 8″ Tablet (any generation), Onn 10.1″ Pro, Onn 11 Tablet Pro, or the older Onn 11.6″.
Onn tablets are Walmart’s house-brand Android devices, and they have a few specific failure patterns that don’t apply to Fire tablets or Lenovo tablets. The most common one — by a wide margin — is a charging port clogged with pocket lint. The second most common is a battery that’s simply worn out. The fixes are ordered from easiest and most likely to succeed down to the more drastic options.
Before you start: identify the symptom
Jump to the fix that matches what your tablet is actually doing:
- Completely black screen, no reaction to buttons: Start with Fix 1.
- Flashing battery icon when you plug in the charger but won’t boot: Go to Fix 2.
- Onn or Walmart logo appears, then the tablet restarts in a loop: Go to Fix 5.
- Screen stays black but you hear notification sounds: Start with Fix 3, then consider Fix 8 (likely display failure).
- Tablet was dropped or got wet before this happened: Skip to Fix 8 — this is likely hardware damage.
- Tablet turns on only when plugged in and dies immediately when unplugged: Go to Fix 8 (battery failure).
- Tablet is stuck showing “FastBoot Mode” or “Select Boot Mode”: Go to Fix 4.
Now work through the fixes in order for your symptom.
Fix 1: The 30-second power press
Best for: completely black, unresponsive tablet. This is the most successful single fix for Onn tablets.
Onn tablets occasionally enter a sleep state deeper than normal standby, which a short power press won’t wake. The fix is a long, deliberate power press that forces a full firmware-level reboot.
Step-by-step
- Remove the tablet from any case or cover (cases with magnets can interfere with button signals on some Onn models)
- Disconnect the charger
- Press and hold the Power button for 30 full seconds. Count it slowly — “one thousand one, one thousand two…”
- The screen may flash, or the Onn/Walmart logo may briefly appear during the 30 seconds. Keep holding anyway
- After 30 seconds, release the power button
- Wait 10 seconds
- Press the power button briefly (2 seconds) to turn the tablet on normally
For most “dead” Onn tablets, this alone resolves the issue. If nothing happens, move to Fix 2.
Why 30 seconds?
Most tablets recommend 10-second press. Onn tablets specifically need closer to 30 seconds because their low-power sleep state takes longer to override. If you’ve tried 10 seconds and given up, try again with the full 30 — this catches many people off guard.
Fix 2: Fix the charging setup (the lint problem)
Best for: tablets showing a flashing battery icon, or tablets that appear completely dead after sitting unused for a while.
This fix resolves a huge percentage of “my Onn tablet is dead” cases. The USB-C port on Onn tablets (all models, but especially the 8″ and 10.1″) is shallow and collects pocket lint, dust, and debris. Over time, the cable stops making solid contact with the internal connectors and the tablet can’t charge.
Step-by-step
- Inspect the charging port. Shine a flashlight directly into the USB-C port (or microUSB on older Surf Onn 7″ models). Look for visible lint, dust, or fabric fibers
- Clean the port carefully. Use a wooden toothpick or plastic SIM-eject tool — never metal, never a needle. Work gently along the inside walls of the port to scrape out any debris. Tilt the tablet so anything loose falls out
- If you see a lot of debris, use compressed air. A short burst of canned compressed air pointed into the port clears out what the toothpick missed
- Use a known-good charger. Third-party chargers and cables cause about a third of Onn “dead tablet” reports. If possible, use the original Onn charger that came in the box. If you’ve lost it, any quality USB-C phone charger rated for at least 10W will work
- Try a different cable. Charge-only USB-C cables (especially the thin ones included with some accessories) don’t deliver enough power for Onn tablets. A quality data-capable USB-C cable is required
- Plug into a wall outlet, not a laptop or USB hub. USB ports on computers often don’t deliver enough amperage for Onn tablets
- Let it charge for 1 hour without touching anything. Do not press the power button during this time. If the battery was deeply discharged, the tablet needs a continuous trickle charge to reach minimum voltage before the screen can turn on
- After 1 hour, press the power button briefly. If a charging indicator appears, continue charging for 2 more hours before trying to use the tablet
If the tablet still won’t respond after a full charging cycle with a clean port and good cable, move to Fix 3.
Fix 3: Power + Volume force restart
Best for: frozen tablets, tablets stuck on the Onn logo, or when the screen is black but the tablet is clearly running (notification sounds, backlight glow).
This is a hardware-level force restart that bypasses Android entirely.
For current Onn models (Onn 8″ 2024+, Onn 10.1″ 2024+, Onn 11 Pro, Onn 11.6″):
- Hold Power + Volume Up together for 20 seconds
- If the Onn/Walmart logo appears, keep holding until the full 20 seconds have passed
- Release both buttons
- Wait 10 seconds, then press Power briefly to start the tablet
For older Onn models (Surf Onn 7″, Onn 8″ 2020-2022, Onn 10.1″ Pro first-gen):
- Hold Power + Volume Down together for 20 seconds
- Some units respond to Power + both volume buttons simultaneously — try this if the standard combination fails
- Release and wait 10 seconds
- Press Power briefly
If none of the combinations work:
Try the “three-button” technique that some Onn tablets require:
- Hold Power + Volume Up + Volume Down all at once for 60 seconds
- Release all buttons simultaneously
- Wait 30 seconds
- Press Power briefly
The three-button combination is documented in Walmart’s internal service manuals for certain Onn models and isn’t mentioned in the user manual. It’s the fix of last resort before moving to more drastic options.
Fix 4: Escape FastBoot or Boot Mode
Best for: tablets stuck on a “FastBoot Mode” screen or a “Select Boot Mode” menu.
Some Onn tablets accidentally boot into FastBoot or a boot selection menu, especially after a failed shutdown or a stuck power button. This looks like a failed boot but is actually a diagnostic state.
If you see “Select a Boot Mode” with a list of options:
- Use Volume Down to navigate to “Normal Boot” (exact wording varies by model)
- Press Power to select
- The tablet should boot normally
If you see a “FastBoot Mode” screen (usually black with small text):
- Hold Power for 20 seconds — this forces exit from FastBoot mode and triggers a normal restart
- The tablet should power off, then back on
If the tablet keeps returning to Boot Mode:
This indicates a partial OS corruption — the tablet can’t complete a normal boot. Move to Fix 5 (recovery mode factory reset). This is also the scenario where the tablet shows a boot loop (Onn logo → disappears → Onn logo again).
Fix 5: Factory reset via recovery mode
Best for: tablets stuck in a boot loop, tablets that won’t get past the Onn or Walmart logo, or any case where the tablet seems to run but never finishes booting.
This erases everything on the tablet but brings it back to working order in the vast majority of software-related failures.
Warning: a factory reset from recovery erases all data — apps, photos, settings, downloaded content. There’s no recovery after this. Only use it if the simpler fixes haven’t worked.
Step-by-step
- Make sure the tablet has at least 30% battery. If not, charge for 1 hour first
- Power off the tablet completely. Hold Power for 30 seconds if needed to force shutdown
- Wait 10 seconds
- Press and hold Power + Volume Up simultaneously for about 10 seconds
- Release both buttons when you see the Onn logo or a recovery screen
- If you see “No Command” with an Android robot lying down, press and briefly tap Power + Volume Up once more to reveal the recovery menu
- Navigate with Volume buttons (the touchscreen doesn’t work in recovery mode)
- Select “Wipe cache partition” first — this is non-destructive and often fixes boot loops without erasing your data
- Press Power to confirm
- When the cache wipe completes, select “Reboot system now”
If the tablet boots normally after a cache wipe, you’re done with your data intact. If it’s still stuck in a boot loop, repeat from step 2 and this time select “Wipe data/factory reset” on step 8. After the full reset completes, select “Reboot system now”.
For Onn-specific recovery mode details and what to do if the menu won’t appear, see our Onn Tablet PIN Bypass guide which covers recovery mode troubleshooting for every Onn model in depth.
Fix 6: 24-hour deep discharge recovery
Best for: Onn tablets that haven’t been used for months or more and show no sign of life at all.
Lithium-ion batteries in Onn tablets have a protection circuit that shuts them down completely when voltage drops below a critical threshold. Once below this threshold, even plugging in a charger doesn’t restart the tablet immediately — the charging circuit needs time to raise the voltage back to a working level.
- Plug the tablet into a wall outlet with a known-good USB-C charger and cable
- Leave it plugged in and completely untouched for 24 hours. Don’t press the power button, don’t check on it, don’t unplug and replug the cable
- After 24 hours, press the power button briefly once
- If a battery-empty icon or charging indicator appears, continue charging for another 2–3 hours before using the tablet
This fix specifically works for tablets that have been sitting in drawers or closets unused for long periods. Each failed wake attempt resets the voltage progress, which is why patience is critical — uninterrupted charging is the key.
Fix 7: Try a completely different charger
Best for: confirming whether the problem is the tablet or the charging setup.
Before assuming the tablet itself is broken, borrow a completely different USB-C charging setup from someone — ideally from a different brand. If you can borrow a friend’s phone charger (any quality USB-C charger, any brand, as long as it’s rated at least 10W), try it.
- Use their charger on your Onn tablet for 1 full hour
- If the tablet now shows any sign of life (charging indicator, battery icon, any LED), the problem was your charger or cable, not the tablet
- Replace your charging cable first (cheaper), then the charging adapter if needed. Quality USB-C cables from reputable brands cost $8–$15 on Amazon. Avoid unbranded knockoffs
For Surf Onn 7″ and older 8″ models that use microUSB: a quality microUSB cable (not charge-only) rated for at least 2A is required. The cheap cables bundled with many accessories won’t work.
Fix 8: Identify hardware failure
Best for: when none of the previous fixes have worked after multiple attempts.
At this point, the tablet has a hardware problem. Here’s how to identify which component has failed:
Dead battery symptoms
- Tablet works only when plugged in
- Tablet dies within minutes of being unplugged, even if the battery indicator showed 100%
- Battery drains from 100% to 0% in less than an hour of normal use
- Tablet refuses to charge past a certain low percentage
Onn tablet batteries have a shorter useful life than premium tablets — typically 1.5–2.5 years of daily use before significant degradation. If your tablet is more than 2 years old and showing these symptoms, the battery is end-of-life.
Battery replacement cost: $30–$60 at a local phone/tablet repair shop. On Onn tablets more than 2 years old, this rarely makes economic sense — a new Onn 8″ costs $99 and a new Onn 10.1″ costs $129 at Walmart.
Failed display symptoms
- Tablet is clearly running (you can hear startup chimes, notification sounds, Alexa or Google Assistant responses if configured)
- Charging indicator LED works
- Screen stays black, or shows only a faint backlight, or has visible lines/colored bars
- Screen sometimes flickers briefly when the tablet wakes up
Display replacement cost: $40–$90 depending on model. Same economic calculation as battery — often not worth it on an Onn tablet under $100 new.
Damaged charging port symptoms
- Charging works only at specific cable angles
- Any movement of the cable stops the charge
- Charging port feels loose when you plug the cable in
- Visible damage to the USB-C or microUSB port
Charging port repair: $30–$60 at a repair shop. This is the cheapest hardware repair and is sometimes worth doing even on a $99 tablet if the alternative is buying a new one with all its setup pain.
Motherboard or power IC failure
- No fix works, including Fix 1 and Fix 3
- No LED indicator when plugged in
- Tablet has been dropped or exposed to water
Motherboard-level repairs on Onn tablets almost never make economic sense. Recycle and replace.
What to do with a dead Onn tablet
If it’s under warranty (Walmart offers 90 days standard, extendable to 2 years with Allstate Protection Plan):
- Call Walmart Customer Service at 1-800-925-6278
- Provide your receipt (digital receipts from the Walmart app work) and the model number
- If within warranty, Walmart typically issues a replacement or refund
If out of warranty:
- Walmart trade-in: some Walmart stores accept electronics trade-in for store credit. Small amount but better than nothing
- Recycle responsibly: Best Buy accepts most tablets for free recycling. Most US cities have free e-waste drop-off sites. Don’t throw the tablet in household trash — it contains lithium and heavy metals
If you’re replacing the Onn tablet:
- The current Onn 8″ Tablet (2024 Gen 4) is $99 and significantly better than earlier generations
- The Onn 11 Tablet Pro at $129 is the best-value Walmart tablet for slightly more than budget-tier pricing
- If you want a longer-lasting tablet, consider the Amazon Fire HD 10 at around $140 (see our Fire tablet troubleshooting guide for what to expect) or a Lenovo Tab M-series starting around $130 (see our Lenovo reset guide for model details)
Troubleshooting
“I held Power for 30 seconds and nothing happened.” Try it with the tablet plugged into a wall outlet. Some Onn tablets refuse to respond to any button press when the battery is critically low.
“I see a tiny red LED near the charging port but the tablet won’t wake up.” The red LED means the battery is charging but hasn’t reached minimum voltage yet. Leave the tablet plugged in and completely untouched for 3 hours, then try Fix 1.
“My Onn tablet is stuck on the Walmart loading screen forever.” This is a corrupted boot state. Use Fix 5 (recovery mode wipe cache). If that doesn’t work, use Fix 5 again but select factory reset instead.
“The screen shows vertical green or colored lines.” Display failure. The tablet is technically working but the screen hardware has failed. See Fix 8 — this is a display replacement or replacement-tablet situation.
“I can hear the startup sound but the screen is black.” Display backlight or connector failure. Fix 3 won’t help here — this is hardware. Fix 8 applies.
“The tablet gets stuck at ‘Android is upgrading’ and never finishes.” Leave it plugged in — on older Onn models this initial post-update process can take 30–60 minutes on first boot. If it’s still stuck after 90 minutes, force restart (Fix 3) and use Fix 5 recovery mode.
“My tablet shows it’s charging (battery icon) but the percentage never goes up.” Almost always a damaged charging port or bad cable — try Fix 7 with a different charger. If a different charger charges normally, replace your Onn’s cable. If even a known-good charger doesn’t charge, it’s the charging port (Fix 8).
“After all this, the tablet turns on but loses all my data.” If you performed a factory reset in Fix 5, yes — that’s expected. The tablet is now in “new” state. Sign in with your Google account to restore synced data (contacts, calendar, Gmail, Drive files), then manually reinstall any apps you need.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Walmart Onn tablet battery last before it degrades? 1.5–2.5 years of daily use, significantly shorter than Fire tablets (3–4 years) or Lenovo tablets (3–5 years). This is the primary tradeoff for Onn’s low price point.
Can I fix my Onn tablet’s battery myself? Technically yes, but the battery is glued in place on most Onn models and requires heat, prying tools, and steady hands. A repair shop does it for $30–$60 and warranties the work for 30 days. Unless you enjoy the project, paying a shop is smarter.
How long should I charge a dead Onn tablet? Minimum 30 minutes. Ideally 1 hour before attempting any power-on. For tablets that haven’t been used in months, a full 24 hours is needed to recover from deep discharge.
Can I use an iPhone charger on my Onn tablet? USB-C iPhone chargers (the ones included with iPhone 15+) work fine on Onn tablets with USB-C. Older Apple chargers with Lightning connectors do not work — the cable is incompatible. A generic 10W+ USB-C charger from any brand is fine.
Is there a hidden reset button on an Onn tablet? No. All resets are button-combination based. Some Chinese tablets have a pinhole reset button; Walmart Onn tablets do not.
My Onn tablet is 3 years old and has been unreliable lately. Should I buy a new one? Probably yes. At 3 years Onn tablets are typically at end-of-life for both battery and processor performance. A new Onn 8″ at $99 is almost always more economical than repairs.
The tablet turns on but I’m locked out — is this a “won’t turn on” problem? No — that’s a locked-out tablet, not a power issue. See our Onn Tablet PIN Bypass guide for the full reset procedure.
Can Walmart repair my Onn tablet in-store? No. Walmart sells Onn tablets but does not repair them. In-warranty issues are handled by return/replacement. Out-of-warranty repair requires a third-party phone/tablet repair shop.
