Fire Tablet Not Charging? 9 Fixes for Every Amazon Fire Model (2026)

You plug in your Amazon Fire tablet, and… nothing. No charging icon, or the percentage barely moves after an hour, or it only charges if you hold the cable at a certain angle. Charging problems are the most common Fire tablet complaint after “it won’t turn on” — and in most cases the cause is the charger, the cable, or a dirty port, not a dead tablet.

Work through the fixes below in order. They go from the quickest and most likely to the least likely.

First: what does “not charging” look like on yours?

  • Screen stays black when plugged in → the tablet may be fully drained or frozen. Start with Fix 1, and if it still won’t wake, see our Fire tablet won’t turn on guide.
  • Tablet is on, but no lightning bolt on the battery icon → charger, cable or port. Fixes 2–6.
  • It charges, but very slowly → usually a low-power charger or the tablet being used heavily while charging. Fix 3.
  • A “liquid detected” message → Fix 5.

Note: current Fire tablets don’t have a charging LED. The only feedback is the on-screen battery icon, so a black screen doesn’t tell you whether it’s charging.

Fix 1: Charge for 30 minutes, then do the 40-second reset

Amazon’s own steps for a tablet that won’t respond: leave it on the charger for at least 30 minutes, ideally with the Amazon adapter that came in the box. Then hold the power button for 40 seconds (until it shuts off), release, and press it for 2 seconds to turn it back on. A frozen tablet can’t display the charging icon even when it is charging, and this resets it.

Fix 2: Swap the cable first

Cables fail far more often than chargers or tablets — especially the ones that get bent at the plug end by kids using the tablet while it charges. Try a different cable you know works with another device.

  • Which connector? Fire tablets from before 2019 use micro-USB. USB-C arrived on the Fire HD 10 in 2019 and the Fire HD 8 in 2020; all current models use USB-C.
  • If you need a replacement, a good USB-C to USB-C cable like the Anker 240W USB-C cable (6 ft, 2-pack) is a better long-term bet than a no-name cable.

Fix 3: Use a charger with enough power

An old 5W phone cube or a laptop USB port will keep a Fire tablet alive, but it may not charge it while you’re using it. Here’s what Amazon ships and what each model can take:

ModelCharger in the boxFull charge (Amazon’s figure)
Fire 7 (2022)5Wabout 4 hours
Fire HD 8 (2022)5Wabout 5 hours
Fire HD 8 Plus (2022)9Wabout 3 hours
Fire HD 10 (2023)9Wnot stated
Fire Max 119W (supports up to 15W)not stated

USB-C Fire tablets that support faster charging need a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger and a USB-C to USB-C cable to get it. A small 20–30W PD charger is safe — the tablet only draws what it can handle. Good options: Amazon Basics 30W GaN USB-C charger, Anker Nano Pro 20W, or UGREEN Nexode 30W. Fix 4: Try a different wall outlet (not a power strip or PC)

Plug the charger straight into a wall socket you know works. Power strips with a switch, car chargers and computer USB ports are the usual suspects for “charges at 1% per hour”.

Fix 5: “Liquid detected” warning

On USB-C Fire tablets, if the tablet detects moisture in the port it blocks charging to protect itself. Amazon’s instructions:

  1. Unplug the cable.
  2. Hold the tablet with the port facing down and shake it gently for about 5 seconds.
  3. Leave it to dry — Amazon says this can take up to 48 hours. Don’t use a hair dryer or put it in rice.

Amazon also notes some third-party cables can trigger false liquid alerts, and that a software update can help (Settings → Device Options → System Updates). If the warning appears with a dry tablet, try the original Amazon cable.

Fix 6: Clean the charging port

Pocket lint and crumbs pack into the port over time and stop the plug seating fully — the classic sign is a cable that only charges at an angle.

  1. Turn the tablet off.
  2. Shine a flashlight into the port and look for debris.
  3. Use short bursts of compressed air, then gently loosen anything stuck with a wooden toothpick, then air again.
  4. Never use metal (pins, paperclips) and don’t blow into the port with your mouth — moisture will trigger Fix 5.

Also look for a bent or broken pin inside. If you see one, the port is damaged; on Fire tablets it’s soldered to the main board, so that’s a repair-shop job.

Fix 7: Check the temperature

Amazon rates Fire tablets for use between 0 and 35°C (32–95°F). A tablet left in a hot car or charged under a pillow can pause charging until it cools down. Let it reach room temperature, take it out of a thick case, and try again.

Fix 8: Install updates and restart

Once it has some charge, go to Settings → Device Options → System Updates. Then restart. If the battery drains suspiciously fast after charging, a misbehaving app may be the cause — our speed-up guide shows how to find battery-hungry apps.

Fix 9: Recognize a worn-out battery

If you’ve tried a known-good cable and charger and the tablet:

  • goes from 100% to 20% in an hour of light use,
  • shuts down at 20–30% remaining, or
  • only works while plugged in,

the battery has likely reached the end of its life. Amazon states the battery should only be replaced by a qualified service provider. On an older tablet a repair may cost more than the tablet is worth; check your warranty first (Kids editions bought new usually carried a worry-free guarantee). If it’s time to replace it, note that Amazon stopped making Fire tablets in October 2026 — see what the switch to Alexa Tablets means before you buy.

Wireless charging and docks

Only some Fire models charge wirelessly: the Fire HD 10 Plus and the Fire HD 8 Plus (2022) work with Qi-certified wireless chargers. If wireless charging stops, Amazon suggests centering the tablet on the dock, removing the case, checking the dock has power, and doing the 40-second restart. The older Show Mode Charging Dock is a pin-contact dock (not wireless) that only fits specific 7th- and 8th-generation HD models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my phone charger on a Fire tablet?

Yes, if the connector matches. A USB-C PD phone charger (20W or more) will charge any USB-C Fire tablet safely and usually faster than the 5W cube some models come with.

Why does my Fire tablet say charging but the percentage goes down?

The charger supplies less power than the tablet is using — typical with 5W chargers during video or games. Use a 9W+ charger, or let it charge with the screen off.

How do I know if my Fire tablet is charging when the screen is off?

Press the power button briefly; the screen shows the battery level with a charging symbol. There’s no LED on current models.

Is it bad to leave a Fire tablet plugged in overnight?

The tablet stops charging when full. Keeping it cool and out of a thick case while charging is more important than unplugging it.
