Roblox “New Appstore Version Required” on Fire Tablet: How to Fix It (2026)
Your kid taps Roblox on the Fire tablet and, instead of the game, a box pops up: “New Appstore version required — Amazon Appstore is out of date. Please visit the Amazon website to install the latest version of the Appstore.” The only buttons are Quit and Help, and tapping Help takes you to a page saying the Appstore has been discontinued. No download, no update button, no obvious way out.
If that’s what you’re seeing, you’re not alone and you didn’t break anything. This guide explains what the message actually means, what Amazon has said about it so far, and the fixes to try — in the order most likely to work.
Quick answer
- It’s not your tablet. Since around October 8, 2026, Fire tablet and Fire TV owners have been reporting this exact dialog in several apps, Roblox included. Amazon staff confirmed on its developer forum that the team is investigating.
- The fix Amazon support has suggested: clear the Appstore app’s cache and storage, then Force Stop it (steps below).
- The Appstore is not shutting down on Fire tablets. The “discontinued” page you see after tapping Help is about Android phones, not Fire tablets.
What the “New Appstore version required” message means
Apps you install from the Amazon Appstore — Roblox included — check that the Appstore on your device is recent enough before they start. When that check fails, the app blocks itself and shows this dialog.
On October 16, 2026 an app developer reported on Amazon’s developer community that the dialog was blocking apps on Fire HD 10 tablets, kids’ Fire tablets and Fire TV Stick 4K devices, starting around October 8 — without any new version of their app being uploaded. Other users in the same thread confirmed Roblox was affected. On October 19 an Amazon staff member replied that the team was investigating. As of this writing Amazon has not published an official cause.
In other words: Roblox didn’t suddenly decide your tablet is too old, and you don’t need to buy anything. Something on the Appstore side is telling apps that your Appstore is out of date.
Why the Help button says the Appstore is “discontinued”
This is the part that scares most parents. Here’s the context: Amazon shut down the Amazon Appstore for regular Android phones on August 20, 2025. In the same announcement Amazon stated that the Appstore “will continue to be available and supported on Fire TV, Fire Tablet, and Fire TV built-in products.”
The Help button in the error simply points to that phone-shutdown page. It does not mean the Appstore on your Fire tablet is gone.
Fix 1: Clear the Appstore’s cache and storage, then Force Stop
This is the procedure an Amazon staff member posted in the developer thread on October 21, 2026. It resets the Appstore app itself — your games, purchases and Roblox account are not deleted.
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet (use the parent profile, not the child profile).
- Tap Apps & Notifications, then See all apps (on some versions: Manage All Applications).
- Find and tap Appstore.
- Tap Storage & cache, then Clear cache, then Clear storage.
- Go back to the Appstore’s app info screen and tap Force Stop.
- Open the Appstore once and wait for it to load completely, then try Roblox again.
Amazon’s own help page on clearing app cache and data on Fire tablets describes the same menus.
Fix 2: Install the latest Fire OS update
Go to Settings → Device Options → System Updates and tap Check Now (or Update if one is waiting). The tablet restarts and shows “Installing system update”. Keep it plugged in while it runs. Amazon’s steps are on its Fire tablet software updates page.
Be aware: the developer who first reported the problem said a system update alone did not fix it for them. Do it anyway — it’s free, and a later fix from Amazon is likely to arrive this way.
Fix 3: Update or reinstall Roblox
- Open the Appstore, search Roblox, and tap Update if the button appears.
- If not, uninstall Roblox (press and hold the icon → Uninstall), restart the tablet, and install it again from the Appstore.
Your Roblox progress lives on your Roblox account, not on the tablet, so reinstalling doesn’t lose anything as long as you know the account’s username and password. Check that before you uninstall.
Fix 4: Restart the tablet properly
Hold the power button until the power menu appears and choose Restart. If the tablet is frozen, hold the power button for about 40 seconds until the screen goes off, then press it again for a couple of seconds. If none of this works
Because the cause is on Amazon’s side, there’s a real chance nothing you do locally will fix it until Amazon pushes a correction. In that case:
- Contact Amazon support and mention the exact text of the dialog. In the developer thread Amazon asked for device serial numbers (Settings → Device Options → About Fire Tablet) — have it ready.
- Don’t factory reset just for this. A reset wipes the tablet and, based on the reports so far, there’s no evidence it clears this specific error. If you do decide to reset for other reasons, follow our Fire tablet factory reset guide.
- Avoid “Appstore APK” downloads from random websites that promise the “latest version”. Installing system apps from unknown sources is a security risk, especially on a child’s tablet.
Roblox still won’t run? Check if your Fire tablet is supported
Separate from this error, some Fire tablets simply can’t run Roblox. According to Roblox’s system requirements, Android devices need Android 8.0 or later, and Roblox lists Fire 7 (9th generation), Fire HD 8 (8th generation), Fire HD 10 (9th generation) and Fire Max 11 as supported Fire models.
| Fire tablet | Software it can run | Roblox? |
|---|---|---|
| Fire 7 (2017) / Fire HD 8 (2017) / Fire HD 10 (2017) | Fire OS 5 (based on Android 5.1) | No — below Android 8.0 |
| Fire HD 8 (2018) | Fire OS 6, updatable to Fire OS 7 | Only after updating to Fire OS 7 |
| Fire 7 (2019) | Fire OS 6, updatable to Fire OS 7 (1 GB RAM) | Only after updating; expect lag |
| Fire HD 10 (2019) and newer, Fire HD 8 (2020) and newer, Fire Max 11 | Fire OS 7 or 8 | Yes |

Roblox in the kids’ profile
If Roblox works on the parent profile but not on your child’s, that’s usually an Amazon Kids permissions issue rather than this error. Apps installed on the parent profile only show up for a child after a parent adds them to that child’s profile. Our Amazon Kids guide explains how profiles and content sharing work.
Is it time to replace the tablet?
Not because of this error. But if your Fire tablet is one of the 2017-or-older models in the table above, Roblox won’t run on it no matter what. Worth knowing before you buy: in October 2026 Amazon stopped making Fire tablets and replaced them with the Alexa Tablet range, which runs full Android with the Google Play Store — so Roblox installs from Google Play instead of the Amazon Appstore. We explain what that switch means for current owners in Amazon discontinued Fire tablets: what it means for yours.
If you’re replacing a kid’s tablet, the Amazon Kids Tablet 11 (ages 6–12) and the Alexa Tablet 11 are the new Google Play–based options. On a tighter budget, see our best budget tablets under $100.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Amazon Appstore shutting down on Fire tablets?
No. Amazon ended the Appstore on Android phones on August 20, 2025, and stated that it continues on Fire tablets and Fire TV. Amazon hasn’t announced any shutdown date for Fire tablets.
Will clearing the Appstore’s storage delete my apps or purchases?
No. It resets the Appstore app’s own data. Installed apps and purchases are tied to your Amazon account. You may need to wait a minute for the Appstore to resync the first time you open it.
Is the error only on Roblox?
No. The developer reports describe several Appstore apps affected on both Fire tablets and Fire TV devices. Roblox is simply the one most families notice first.
Can I install Roblox from Google Play on a Fire tablet instead?
Fire tablets don’t include Google Play. Sideloading Google Play is possible but unofficial, and one user in the developer thread reported Roblox from Google Play ran on the parent profile but crashed on the kids’ profile. We don’t recommend it on a child’s tablet.
